GAT @ eTime - Term 4, 2010

This term’s theme, ‘The Way It’s Made’ is a multidisciplinary unit with a focus on architecture. Learning will be fast-paced, rigorous and specifically designed to meet our GATE children’s higher level learning needs. Within this theme there will be diverse challenges. These may be as varied as analysing the structural absurdities in the art of Escher, to observing the distinctive architectural features in our adjacent Arts Centre.

The children will work across the curriculum areas of science, numeracy, art, history and literacy. Some of the term’s key learning objectives are that the children will:

      •   Understand the concept of structure especially as it is applied to the built environment.

      •   Develop an understanding of the relationship between mathematics and nature. The children will understand the concept of
the Golden Mean and see that it is present in nature and architecture.
      •   Investigate aspects of the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations and develop an appreciation of these two distinctive
architectural styles.
      •   Develop an understanding of the difference between aesthetics and functionality as applied to architectural structures.

      •   Develop products that illustrate their understanding of architectural design.

      •   Develop clarity, accuracy and precision in their communication of these understandings.

      •   Select forms of communication appropriate to the purpose and intended audience.

The children’s learning experiences will be enhanced with the unique leading edge technology of eTime. Tasks will be set using Bloom’s Taxonomy and Socratic questioning techniques.

Trips to the Art Gallery, Arts Centre, adjacent historic buildings and the Botanic Gardens are some of the possible sites that the children will use in exploring this term’s theme. Digital footage of these excursions and internet research will be combined to create this term’s ‘The Way It’s Made’ website.
